Handel’s breakout opera masterpiece, Agrippina offers a wryly satirical look at the political maneuverings and personal entanglements of the Roman emperor Claudius, his cadre of advisers and hangers-on, and his cunning wife, Agrippina.

It ran for twenty-seven performances during the carnival season in Venice, and secured his international reputation. Enthusiastic audiences greeted every pause in the music with cries of ‘Viva il caro Sassone’ (Long live the dear Saxon). The climax of Handel’s Italian sojourn, Agrippina ran and ran after its sensational Venice premiere early in 1710. As told by the composer’s first biographer, John Mainwaring, audiences were ‘thunderstruck by the grandeur and sublimity of his style, for never had they known till then all the powers of harmony and modulation so closely arrayed, and so forcibly combined’.
